Rep. Mimi Walters: Accountability Is Being Restored to the Department of Veterans Affairs
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Mimi Walters (California-45) released the following statement regarding the Veterans Affairs (VA) Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act being signed into law by President Trump.
“Today, the President signed into law a bill that will go a long way toward keeping our promise to fix the broken VA system. The bipartisan VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act will hold accountable those VA employees who engage in misconduct and make it easier to remove, demote, or suspend employees who have contributed to the dysfunction that plagues the VA system. This new law will also provide greater protections for whistleblowers who expose the problems that endanger our veterans.
“In Orange County and across the country, thousands of VA workers provide our Nation’s heroes with the top-notch care and assistance they earned through service to our Nation. However, in recent years, some VA employees exercised gross negligence and incompetence, which resulted in tragedy. Unfortunately, arcane bureaucratic rules prevented VA leaders from removing or reprimanding those employees. Those days are over.
“I thank my colleagues in both chambers for taking swift action to send this vital legislation to the President’s desk. Our Nation made a promise to care for the brave service members who have made significant sacrifices for our freedom. I am confident this law will help ensure that the VA will fulfill that promise.”
