Rep. Mimi Walters Applauds Passage of Stiff Sanctions against Hostile Foreign Governments
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives kept its promise to hold responsible hostile foreign governments that threaten our national security by passing H.R. 3364, the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.
This legislation would expand and strengthen sanctions on Russia, North Korea, and Iran to deter aggression towards the United States and our allies.
Rep. Walters said, “The United States House of Representatives sent a clear message to our adversaries across the globe: If you threaten our Nation, you will face serious consequences.
“Moscow’s repeated efforts to undermine our democracy and destabilize the world cannot be tolerated. In addition to their inappropriate attempts to influence the 2016 election, Russia has employed various campaigns and cyber operations to delegitimize the NATO alliance. Vladimir Putin’s support for the brutal Assad regime in Syria, and Russian aggression in Ukraine demonstrates Russia’s willingness to upend stability throughout the world.
“North Korea continues to rapidly expand its nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programs with the intent to develop the capability of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States in the coming years, according to U.S. intelligence estimates. With nuclear weapons and missile tests expected in the near future, it is more important than ever to eliminate Kim Jong-un’s access to international financial markets.
“These justified and far-reaching sanctions will send a strong message to hostile foreign states that the American people will not tolerate threats against our Nation or our allies.”
Walters represents California’s 45th District and serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
