Rep. Mimi Walters: Bipartisan House Veterans Bill Will Improve the Lives of America’s Heroes
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives stood with America’s veterans by passing the Forever GI Bill (H.R. 3218), which would expand and improve educational opportunities for servicemembers.
The Forever GI Bill would provide flexibility for eligible veterans and their beneficiaries by ensuring that educational benefits do not expire. It would also allow veterans to utilize GI Bill benefits for non-traditional technology courses, like STEM courses outside of a conventional classroom setting. Further, H.R. 3218 would expand GI Benefits for national guardsmen and reservists. Importantly, this legislation would restore GI Bill eligibility for veterans impacted by mid-semester school closures.
Rep. Walters said, “Today’s action by the House of Representatives illustrates our deep bipartisan commitment to improving the lives of our Nation’s heroes and their families.
“We owe our returning veterans the support they’ve earned through service to our Nation. An improved GI Bill is an essential part of this promise. The Forever GI Bill is an important step toward modernizing our veteran benefits system.
“Our veterans deserve nothing but the best from the country that they fought to defend, and I am proud to honor their sacrifices by supporting this legislation.”
Walters represents California’s 45th District and serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
