Rep. Mimi Walters: Government Shutdown is Unacceptable
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Mimi Walters (R-California) released the following statement regarding the failed House/Senate passage of H.R. 195, the Extension of Continuing Appropriations Act.
Said Rep. Walters, “The government shutdown is a direct result of Democrats playing political games at the expense of the American people. A short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) is far from ideal, but a government shutdown accomplishes nothing.
“The shutdown endangers our national security by impairing the Department of Defense’s ability to keep us safe. Secretary of Defense James Mattis unequivocally said a shutdown would have a ‘terrible impact’ on military operations and significantly affect morale. Sec. Mattis also stated that a shutdown would disrupt overseas intelligence missions, impede reservist training and important equipment maintenance activities, and result in the furlough of half of the Department of Defense’s civilian workforce.
“Additionally, the 16,000 children in California’s 45th Congressional District who receive health care through the Children’s Health Insurance Program were deprived of a long-term extension of the program. These children must have assured access to health insurance.
“We can all agree: this is no way to run a government. Issues unrelated to the funding of our government should not be the reason Americans are subject to a shutdown. Our military’s ability to operate is hamstrung, and the nine million American children who depend on CHIP are left in the cold. I will continue to work with my colleagues around the clock to resolve this unacceptable situation and reopen the government.”
