Rep. Mimi Walters Questions Former Equifax CEO Over Recent Data Breach
Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Mimi Walters (R-California) questioned former Equifax CEO Richard Smith during his testimony before the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection. Her statement on the hearing and video of her questioning is below.
Said Rep. Walters, “Orange County consumers must have confidence that their personal and financial information is secure. Companies using that information have an obligation to American consumers to take every precaution to ensure that this sensitive data is protected. Following the massive Equifax data breach, millions of Americans are concerned that their financial future is at risk. Today’s hearing was an important first step in understanding what went wrong and developing solutions to protect consumers.
“I appreciate Mr. Smith appearing before our Subcommittee to offer additional insight into why this breach occurred and the steps Equifax is taking to protect consumers. Equifax must follow through on the commitments relayed to us today. I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure that the personal and financial information of all American consumers is protected.”
