Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Mimi Walters (California-45) released the following statement after voting in favor of the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act of 2017, which would ensure accountability in the federal rulemaking process:

“Across the country, our families and businesses are being crushed by the weight of government overregulation. Overzealous administrations that circumvent Congressional authority by directing federal agencies to issue burdensome regulations are ultimately harming all Americans.  Since 2009, the estimated cumulative costs of regulations have reached nearly $2 trillion at a cost of approximately $15,000 per household.  Regulations are necessary, but when they overreach, they do far more harm than good.  House Republicans know that complex and burdensome overregulation is killing jobs and stifling our economy.  Regulating sensibly is a crucial piece of our Better Way agenda, and it is exactly why we passed the REINS Act today.  This bill would give Congress a simple up or down vote on major federal regulations that impose significant costs and burdens on families and businesses.  The American people deserve accountability and transparency in the regulatory process.  Unlike federal agency bureaucrats, Congress is accountable to the American people.  Our government is one of checks and balances, and the REINS Act will provide a necessary check on the executive branch’s reckless regulatory actions.  I am proud to have cosponsored this legislation and pleased to see it pass the House with bipartisan support.  I urge the Senate to consider it expeditiously.”
